IP Ratings And Salt Mist Testing For Ship Detectors

Two detectors sit on a datasheet at almost the same price. One is rated IP44, the other IP66, and the difference reads like a detail until you put both on an exposed mast platform in the Strait of Malacca and come back in eighteen months. One of them will still be in surveillance.

Ingress protection ratings are among the most quoted and least understood figures in equipment selection. The rating itself is precise, the standard behind it is narrow, and the marine qualification that actually decides whether a device survives shipboard service sits in an entirely separate set of tests.

What Do The Two Digits In An IP Rating Mean?

The first digit describes protection against solid foreign objects and against contact with hazardous parts, on a scale from zero to six. The second describes protection against water, on a scale from zero to eight. The system is defined by IEC 60529, and each digit corresponds to a specific laboratory test instead of a general impression of ruggedness.

Read that way, the common marine ratings become easy to place. IP44 means protection against solid objects of one millimetre and above plus splashing water from any direction. IP55 means dust-protected plus water jets from any direction. IP66 means fully dust-tight plus powerful water jets, and IP67 means dust-tight plus temporary immersion at one metre for thirty minutes.

One caution on the higher figures. A rating quoted as IP69K comes from a separate road vehicle standard covering high-pressure, high-temperature washdown, and it does not belong to the IEC 60529 second-digit series at all. The reasoning applied to offshore explosion-proof beacon lights carries across directly here, since enclosure selection on an exposed deck turns on the same trade-off between sealing, heat dissipation and serviceability.

Does SOLAS Set A Minimum IP Rating?

No. Neither SOLAS Chapter II-2 nor Chapter 9 of the FSS Code specifies an IP rating, a degree of enclosure protection or any reference to IEC 60529 for detectors, control panels or cables. Anyone quoting a mandatory minimum from the Code is quoting something that is not there. Ingress protection reaches shipboard fire detection indirectly, through the environmental requirements of the referenced product standards, through class rules, and through the scope of the manufacturer’s own type approval. The practical consequence is that the specifier carries the judgement, and the rating has to be argued from the location rather than looked up in a table.

What Does Marine Qualification Actually Involve?

Type approval testing for shipboard control, monitoring and alarm equipment follows IACS Unified Requirement E10, which is where the environmental severity really sits. The current revision sets out a test programme that an IP rating alone says nothing about.

Cold +5°C for 2 hours, or -25°C for 2 hours depending on location
Salt mist Four spraying periods, each followed by seven days of storage
Vibration 2 to 13.2 Hz at ±1 mm amplitude, then 13.2 to 100 Hz at ±0.7 g
Inclination Static and dynamic 22.5°, with rolling to 22.5° each side over a 10 second period

The full programme is published as the IACS UR E10 test specification for type approval, and comparing a datasheet against it is the quickest way to tell a marine approval from a land-based one carrying a good IP number.

Why Is Salt Mist The Harder Test?

Because salt does not need to get inside an enclosure to end its service life. Four spray periods with a week of storage after each is a corrosion test rather than a sealing test, and what it examines is what happens to gasket materials, fixings, cable glands and exposed terminals once chloride has been deposited and left to sit in a warm, humid atmosphere.

That distinction explains a failure pattern crews will recognise. An enclosure with an excellent IP rating and the wrong fastener material will pass a water jet test on day one and be seized shut, weeping and unserviceable two years into a Southeast Asian trade. Sealing keeps water out; material selection and coating decide whether the housing can still be opened for the annual inspection.

Which Standards Apply, And Which Edition?

Chapter 9 of the FSS Code names its standards explicitly, and the edition years are part of the citation. The control panel is to be tested to EN 54-2, EN 54-4 and IEC 60092-504, while the detector clauses reference IEC 60092-505. Marine equipment certificates commonly add IEC 60533 for electromagnetic compatibility on ships with metallic hulls, which the FSS Code does not itself cite.

Editions move, and 2026 brought a significant change. IEC 60092-504 has been reissued in a fifth edition that replaces the 2016 fourth edition, and one of its substantive changes is the transfer of electromagnetic compatibility content across to IEC 60533.

Certificates issued against the 2016 edition therefore now reference a superseded document, which is not a defect in the equipment but is a question to raise when a certificate comes up for renewal.

Where Does Ingress Protection Fail In Service?

Almost never in the housing itself. Failures cluster at the cable gland fitted without the correct sealing insert, at the lid gasket that was painted over during a hull campaign, at the fixing screw replaced with the nearest available item from the store, and at the drain path blocked by accumulated salt.

Every one of those is an installation or maintenance decision, and every one will defeat a rating that was genuinely achieved in the laboratory.
